A little info about this class...
There has never been a better time to study GCSE sociology. With the social impact of the events of the past few years affecting all of us, sociologists are fascinated to explore the effects of what has been described as the ‘greatest social experiment of modern times’.
Unlike all our other courses, the price for GCSE is £5.00 +VAT a week per student to reflect the amount of work the teacher will need to do to successfully guide you through your GCSE. All marking and feedback is included in the price. You will be expected to do 1 – 2 hours of independent work each week.
Due to some of its themes and content of this course, the age for this class is 14 – 16. If your child is younger than 14 but you would like them to study this course, please make sure that you are aware of the content and either watch the recordings before your child watches them or watch the lessons with your child to ensure that you are happy with the content and can talk it through with your child.
For safeguarding purposes, each Zoom lesson includes a brief registration at the beginning which requires children to have their webcam switched on. If your child would like to join lessons but is anxious about this or needs to have their face covered during lessons for religious or any other reason please get in touch, and we can arrange an alternate method of registration for them.
Many students say that what they particularly love about the study of sociology is that everybody can relate to the topics that are covered. For example, we all have different experiences of childhood and families, and all of us cannot help but be influenced by the growing tentacles of the media which increasingly infiltrates modern life. Perhaps you are interested in what makes people become criminals or the growing class divide in education. Sociology has it all! A GCSE in sociology doesn’t feel like hard work, there is always a new perspective to consider, or a question open to debate! It is not surprising that so many students go on to study Sociology post-16, leading to careers in the Prison Service, Counselling and Psychotherapy, and Social Work to name but a few. The teacher will advise students/parents when each student is likely to be ready.
The full content for GCSE Sociology is covered in 12 months. Please be aware that all our GCSE and IGCSE courses offer a rolling curriculum and cater for children with a wide range of abilities, previous knowledge/study and willingness to work independently. Although we cover the curriculum in the period stated, it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that your child has covered and understood the entire syllabus, kept appropriate notes and has carried out exam practice before they sit their exam. Our teacher will give short exam practice throughout the course and teach the children how to answer the questions, but it is a good idea for your child to sit practice exam papers in the run-up to their actual exam. Our teachers are always happy to help and advise but please make sure you know what your child has studied and areas that need more work before they are ready to sit the exam. Generally speaking, our recommendation is to start around April /May for May/June exams a year later. To find out more please read Taking GCSEs/IGCSEs with LLP.
