Phonics Fun with Jane

Phonics Fun runs on a Wednesday at 12pm and is taught by Jane. It is the second in the Phonics Classes that we offer. This is our Phonics programme from complete beginners all the way up to phase 6 phonics:

Phonics for beginners – Phonics phases 1-2.

Phonics Fun – Phonics phase 3-4.

Next Step Phonics – Phonics phase 5

Phonics Wizards – Phonics phase 6

It was lovely to watch the class this week and find out how the children are getting on with their learning.

Jane started with a lovely gentle introduction, saying hello to the children by name. She obviously knows them all and they obviously know her! The children were really confident at reading some short sentences that focused on different phonics and really enjoyed matching them up to the matching pictures. “The lid is hot” was one of the examples. Jane was quick to reinforce which words were “tricky” so that everyone knew when to switch out of “sounding out” mode. They really enjoyed writing on the screen and it was really lovely to see them all practising writing their V letters together or circling the correct pictures for the sound.

I loved the fact that they could choose between using the printouts at home or what was on the screen – it felt really simple, and easy for them to follow along.

There was a fun calm crafty activity in the middle of the lesson, where the children were using tissue paper and other bits and bobs to make a volcano collage (out of a big letter V). The children were super engrossed and took pride in showing everyone their finished volcanoes at the end of the lesson!

I am now looking forward to being able to visit the other phonics lessons so see how the children progress though the phonics stages. Well done to all the children for being so good at using your phonics – you are amazing!

Suggested extra learning

All our lessons include any relevant worksheets as part of the weekly lesson but you may also want to consider these optional extra learning resources for this class. You do not need them to join the class though.

Final word from Jane

I had a chat with Jane after watching the class, and this is what she had to say. If your children attend one of Jane’s phonics classes, please do comment below and share your experience!

I absolutely love teaching phonics. Seeing children progress from learning phoneme sounds, to reading and writing words then sentences is just amazing! The pure delight on a child’s face when they are able to read and write is priceless. Reading opens up a whole new world for children and enhances their lives in a multitude of ways.’
We have so many exciting activities coming up in Phonics Fun to learn our new phonemes, digraphs and tricky words… we will be singing songs, making pictures, posters and playing games.
